On June 8, around 75 people gathered to celebrate the Cosmic Campground and its connection to the Gila Wilderness at a star party. The event was organized by Victoria Linehan and Michael Hensley, owner of Dark Sky New Mexico, in collaboration with the Forest Service and New Mexico Wild’s Gila Grassroots Organizer, Luke Koenig, who provided volunteers for parking and logistics. Nathan Marquard from the Glenwood Ranger District was recognized for his support.
It was a beautiful night of stargazing. Presentations were given by Michael Hensley, John Holtzman (chair of the New Mexico chapter of Dark Sky International), Linehan, and Grauer.
The event was attended by county commissioners of Catron and Grant counties, Catron County Manager Loren Cushman, notable figures from the astronomy community, and representatives from various conservation organizations.
