Dean Glace, an astronomer from Summerville South Carolina, became Dark Sky New Mexico’s newest community member this past week. Mr. Glace, assisted by DSNM’s Vincent Laupola and Al Acker, installed his Astro Tech AT 14 RC scope on his new Plane Wave L350 Mount and wedge in Observatory 10. “The installation went very smoothly,” said Glace “… with fantastic assistance from Vince and Al and lots of help via phone from Plane Wave and Interactive Astronomy.” His wedge and mount were installed on a pier fabricated by Mesilla Industrial Machining, a DSNM Strategic Partner.
Mr. Glace has been interested in Astronomy for over 20 years and Astrophotography for 10 years. He has been a strong supporter of the Astronomy Programs at Appalachian State University (Boone, North Carolina), donating a scope to their observatory. He received his Masters degree in Electronics Engineering from North Carolina State University and spent nearly 30 years in the United States Navy, retiring with the rank of Captain. His last Navy assignment was updating the Trident Submarine Communications System.
Mr, Glace and his wife, Mary, have been married for 40 years and have 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren. Mr. Glace is a ham radio operator (K4MS) and is the principal trumpet in the Summerville Orchestra.
